Imphal: Five militants of different organisations have laid down arms before BSF in Bishenpur district of Manipur, official sources said on Wednesday.
The militants from United National Liberation Front, People's United Liberation Front and Kangleipak Communist Party-Military Council surrendered before senior officials of the 116th BSF battalion at Loktak area yesterday.
Three 9mm pistols, one lethod gun with live shell, three magazines, two hand grenades, one walkie talkie set and some rounds of ammunitions of different weapons were also handed over to the authorities by the militants, sources said.
Welcoming them, inspector general of the BSF Anup Chand Thapliyal said it was good that the militants chose to join the national mainstream by giving up arms and assured them they would be properly rehabilitated as provisions of the rules and regulations set by the central and state governments.
He said BSF would also extend all possibly assistance and financial benefits to help them start a new life.
Official sources said more than 200 militants of different organisations have laid down arms before the authorities in Manipur this year.

Powerful bomb recovered in Manipur
Imphal, Mar 27 : A powerful bomb was recovered from the godown of a private transporter by labourers in Imphal west district of Manipur today, police said.
The matter was reported to the police who defused the bomb.
Unidentified militants have been planting bombs in different areas for subversive activities for the past few months, police said.

Search launched on Manipur highway for bombs
Imphal: A massive search operation was launched Monday in a three kilometre stretch from Khudengthabi to the border town of Moreh in Manipur's Chandel district to detect bombs planted by insurgents, officials said.
The search along the Imphal-Moreh National Highway by a joint team of para-military forces and police was launched after information was received that powerful bombs might have been planted by insurgents to target security personnel.
Insurgents had detonated powerful bombs at least seven times in the area in the last few months targeting security personnel, officials said.
Major insurgent organisations like United National Liberation Front and People's Liberation Army are active in the area.

Insurgents cross Indo-Myanmar border, surrender in Manipur
Imphal: Four insurgents of banned Kanglei Yawol Kann Lup (KYKL) crossed the Indo-Myanmar international border and surrendered before Manipur police at the border town of Moreh along with arms, police said today.
The insurgents identified as R K Ibungo alias Bishwajit (23), 'Akoijam Basant alias Fighter (38), Ningthoujam Thoiba alias Gopen (25) and lance corporal Akoijam Jiten alias Ningjaba (27) laid down arms before Manipur police commandos at Moreh yesterday, the police said.
The four insurgents who had been staying at an undisclosed area of Myanmar for sometime had informed the police through an intermediary that they wanted to surrender before the authorities and crossed the international border on Sunday last.
The four were brought to Manipur police commando complex here and would be rehabilitated soon, the police said.
The number of insurgents who laid down arms before the authorities have crossed 200 this year and highest number of insurgents who surrendered before the authorities was 197 who laid down arms on February 13 last.
In another unrelated incident, suspected militants exploded a powerful grenade at the residence of the chairman of the autonomous district council (Chandel district) Lukhosei Jou at Moreh town late last night, they said.
Jou's brother-in-law Dounglenzou was injured in the blast. No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

17 grenades seized in Manipur
Imphal, Mar 8 : Seventeen powerful grenades have been recovered from two insurgents of banned People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) in Imphal East district, police said today.
The insurgents were identified as Gurumayum Padmakumar Sharma and Brahamacharimayum Kiran Sharma.
Following a tip-off, commandos attached to Imphal East district police and Assam Rifles personnel, launched a frisking operation at Yaingangpokpi area under Heingang police station yesterday.
The two insurgents were nabbed and the grenades and 'monetary demand letters' were seized from them, the police said.
The police suspect that the grenades were meant to target security and police personnel and attack those persons who refused to comply with their monetary demand.
