Meghen hearing concludes

Guwahati, Sept. 16 : A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court here today concluded the hearing on NIA plea to shift arrested United National Liberation Front (UNLF) chairman Raj Kumar Meghen alias Sana Yaima from Guwahati Central Jail to the high-security Tihar jail in New Delhi.

Advocate Dilip Kumar Das appeared on behalf of the NIA while advocate M. Gunadhar Singh and others argued the case on behalf of Meghen.

NIA special judge Adhir Kumar Das heard both sides and will give the verdict on September 26.

Meghen, who is currently lodged at the Guwahati Central Jail, will have to be produced in the court when the order will be passed.

The NIA wants to shift the UNLF chief to Tihar on “security reasons” as it fears that he might influence the witnesses.

Meghen’s counsels said there was no provision in the Prisons Act for inter-state transfer of under trials except for the National Security Act (NSA) detainees.
