Nexus between GNLA and GSU unearthed: Police

WILLIAMNAGAR (MEGHALAYA), SEPT 5 : The Meghalaya police Sunday unearthed links between Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) rebels and the influential Garo Student's Union activists in Meghalaya, an official said.

The linkages came to the fore after two GSU activists - Crizal D Shira and Silchang D Marak - were arrested this afternoon from Sisobibra area, near Williamnagar, the district headquarters of East Garo Hills to deliver a cash of Rs seven lakh to Sohan D Shira, the military chief of GNLA, police said. The duo was arrested from a vehicle bearing Assam registration number AS-01-AB-3734 which ferried them from Mendipathar to Williamnagar. Sabin Boro, the driver of vehicle was also arrested, police said.

During the preliminary interrogation, Marak said the arrested students have confessed that the seized amount of Rs 7 lakh collected from a municipal toll gate at Mendipathar area was meant to be delivered to Sohan (GNLA Chief). However, the GSU Chief Tengsak G Momin denied that his organization is maintaining links with the GNLA.

The GNLA, which is headed by police officer-turned outlaw Champion R. Sangma, has unleashed a reign of terror in the three impoverished districts of Garo Hills in western part of Meghalaya.
