IMPHAL: At least 29 rebels belonging to different groups based in Manipur, Nagaland and Assam surrendered to security forces at the headquarters of the Army's 57 Mountain Division at Leimakhong near Imphal on Wednesday.
The militants are from NSCN (K), FGN, UNLF, Naga National Council (NNC), Pulf, NSCN (IM) and Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL).
Speaking on the occasion, GOC of the division, Maj-Gen. Binoy Poonnen, praised them for their courage and wisdom in choosing to become responsible citizens of the state and contribute to progressive realization of people's aspirations for peace . The GOC, who commands troops deployed in almost half of Manipur and parts of Assam, assured them of all assistance in their rehabilitation process. He reiterated that the security forces, on their part, would continue to encourage all such endeavours by insurgent groups, both collectively and individually.
Manipur additional DGP (law and order) V Jathang welcomed the cadres to the mainstream and assured them of proper rehabilitation on behalf of the government. During the ceremony, a senior functionary of the United Tribal Liberation Army (Utla)
spoke about their decision to suspend operations to join the national mainstream. He added that his organization will uphold the sovereignty, unity and integrity of the country. A defence statement said the apparent compulsions, which may have motivated these youngsters in choosing the path of militancy in the past, is devoid of all such rationale in the present context. The decision of these youths was lauded as a step in the right direction and it was felt that such events may act as harbingers of many more such surrenders.
