PLA top gun held in Guwahati with four AK47s

GUWAHATI: A joint team of security personnel caught a self-styled lieutenant of the Manipur-based Peoples' Liberation Army (PLA) and found four AK-47s, a pen drive, a mobile phone and several incriminating documents on him in the city's Birubari area on Sunday.

According to sources, Sougrapam Ingousa alias Kangleicha was held as part of the stepped up operations by the Army, the CRPF and the state's police's operation wings following reports of unabated extortion activities by the PLA here.

"We have information that a huge numbers of Manipur-based militants have managed to find safe shelter in the city and are carrying out their extortion drive. Some of them are also involved in drug smuggling," an Army official said.

Adding to police sources, militants from Manipur are working in close coordination with other Assam-based rebel groups. "At present, the Manipuri militants are operating from the city itself. They have connections with various hardliner groups of Assam rebel gropus. It's a major cause of concern for us," said a top official of the Assam Police's operation wing.

Sougrapam is from Hiyanglam village in the Kaksing area of manipur's Thoubal.

On Saturday, police had arrested the self-styled lieutenant colonel of PLA, Thoungjam Ibomcha alias Bali alias Maibam Tomba Singh, from the city's Hengrabari area.

Last year, police arrested 36 rebels who had fled Manipur and taken shelter in the city. Most of them belonged to the UNLF and the PLA.
