Militants gun down trader in Dima Hasao

SILCHAR: Suspected militants on Saturday gunned down a Bengali-speaking Muslim trader at Maibang town, about 50 km from Haflong, the headquarters of Dima Hasao district. The incident took place only days after a group of Dimasa militants surrendered in Haflong.

A senior police official on Sunday said two suspected tribal militants entered the house of Majibur Rahman (36) around 10.30 pm. The duo at first engaged themselves in interactions with Majibur, who dealt with hardwire goods in the town.

After a while, the men shot at Majibur from their AK-series rifle and fled the spot.

Majibur was first taken to the Maibang government hospital in a critical condition, from where doctors referred him to Haflong civil hospital. However, he succumbed to his wounds while being taken to Haflong.

Police and CRPF personnel have launched a manhunt in and around the town.

Majibur is from from Lanka in Nagaon district. He was living as a tenant in Maibang for quite some years.

Police are yet to identify the group or persons involved in the murder. Nineteen cadres of the Dima National Democratic Front (DNDF) surrendered on August 3 before the Army.

With the surrender of DHD (J) and DNDF, only Hills Tiger Force (HTF), a non-Dimasa tribal group, NSCN (IM) and NSCN (K) outfits are active in Dima Hasao district.

In the meantime, police on Sunday exhumed bodies of three villagers that were found from a Kelma-tribe-dominated village near Lungting in Dima Hasao district. The bodied have been identified as P L Sunglai Khelma (28), Denchinglian Ingti (15) and Geo Changlien Khelma (14). They were kidnapped on October 5, 2007 by suspected militants. Their bodies were found in a jungle area between Lungting and Hatikhali. Last week, two bodies were found in the same area. They were identified as Subrata Roy and Nandu Das from the Lungting area.
