ANVC, GNLA welcome probe into ''secret killings''

Shillong, Sep 5 : The A'chik National Volunteers Council (ANVC) and Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) has welcomed the Meghalaya government's decision to probe the secret killing of innocent youths in Garo Hills.

The GNLA, a militant oufit led by Champion Sangma, a former police officer-turned militant leader, had accused its rival-- the ANVC-- of indulging in secret killing of innocent tribal Garos.

Welcoming the inquiry committee, constituted by the Government, to investigate the unmarked graves allegedly by GNLA in Samanda and other camps, ANVC spokesman Torik Marak said his outfit will cooperate with the investigation.

''We have nothing to hide and we only want that peace should be restored in Garo Hills and everything returns to normal,'' Marak said.

The Meghalaya government today instituted a one-man inquiry committee to probe the ''secret killing'' by the ANVC.

ANVC, the most powerful militant group in Garo Hills is currently on a ceasefire agreement with the state and Centre. The ANVC has around 16 arms, including AK series rifles and pistols, deposited in a locked armoury in custody of Tura police.

''We have instituted an inquiry to probe into the allegations of secret killings by the ANVC and to find out the truth behind it,'' Chief Secretary W M S Pariat said.

The one-man inquiry committee, headed by Commissioner and Secretary (Commissioner of Division Tura) Peter W Ingty, will complete the probe within a month.

The GNLA has released the first list of alleged victims allegedly killed by the ANVC.

''Three individuals--Repjen Momin of Samanda Rongap, Dandik Sangma and Ding were taken to ANVC Samanda camp and killed in cold blood. Around the same time Sonjith Momin of Rongsak Bazar, Bachon Marak of Rongsakgre and Reng Marak of Rongsakgre who witnessed the incident were beaten up mercilessly,'' a local daily reported qouting GNLA spokesman Bikdot Nikjang Marak.

The GNLA also demanded that the government immediately impose Section 144 CrPC to prevent ANVC militants from tampering evidence into the alleged ‘secret killings’.
