HNLC warns Nepalese

Shillong, Sept 25 : The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) today threatened to hit back at the Nepalese living in different parts of Meghalaya if the atrocities committed against the Khasis residing at Langpih, West Khasi Hills, did not cease.

In a press statement issued here, the self-styled publicity secretary of the HNLC, Sainkupar Nongtraw, said, “It is a matter of great concern that in Langpih the local people are being victimised at the hands of the Nepalese. It is turning into a serious issue as the state government is not taking the required steps to ensure the safety of local residents.”

Nongtraw’s statement came two days after a group of Nepalese men allegedly attacked four people belonging to the Khasi community at Umtap village near Langpih while they were returning from the fields. One Paul Syiemlieh was injured during the attack, which took place on Thursday evening.

“When the state security agency finds itself in such a helpless condition when its own people are constantly placed under harassment by the intruders, what is expected to happen in defence of the Langpih people? The consequence of neglecting the people can take an undesirable shape, and may not be welcoming for the state government,” Nongtraw said.

“We, therefore, urge the Nepalese community not to create any trouble in Langpih, and if they continue to attack our local people and disturb their peaceful existence, we can also hit back in the same manner and target the Nepalese people in the other parts of the state,” he warned.

Moreover, he said it was unfortunate that both Assam and Meghalaya are helpless to solve the border conflict while they are appeasing the Bangladesh government at the cost of the democratic rights of the people in the two states.

“They should have taken a genuine interest in solving their own problems as encountered by the people otherwise the recent Dhaka visit of the Prime Minister and the chief ministers is nothing but just a show-off business,” Nongtraw said.

“The state government must take into consideration that the people in the border areas are bonafide citizens of the state and they deserve to be treated equally like any other citizen in the state. But when this is not forthcoming, who can stop when some other means are adopted by the people to defend themselves?” he asked.
