Kuki rebels held after counter with Army in Dima Hasao

Silchar, Sep 26 : Assam Rifles jawans nabbed two hardcore Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) militants following an encounter near Haflong, the headquarters of Dima Hasao district, last evening. Police today said acting on a tip-off, the 25 battalion Assam Rifles personnel raided the Kuki-dominated Sangpijang village near Haflong yesterday.

On being challenged the Manipur-based militant outfit started firing at the security forces from the jungles.

When the jawans retaliated, most of the rebels fled. However, two of them came were nabbed by the security forces.

OC Of Haflong police station OC Shanku Sargiari said the arrested rebels had been identified as KLA tax commander Lethao Lienthang and Sehchon Simsong.

They are residents of Sangpijang village. Four guns, one pistol and some ammunition had been recovered from them. Following interrogation AR personnel today handed over the duo to the police.

Mr Sargiari said while Lethao Lienthang is further being interrogated by the police, Sehchon Simsong has been released on bail.

He said the Manipur-based KLA over the years has spread its wings in Dima Hasao district and they are mainly engaged in extortion activities.

The militants take shelter in the Kuki-dominated villages in the district, he added.
